There Is Life After Alzheimer’s

Hundreds of North Carolina families have attended Carillon’s SAFE Alzheimer’s seminar over the years. We offer several SAFE seminars across the state each year, and it’s one of the single most important things we do here at Carillon.

Alzheimer’s is a disease that robs people of the two things that matter most — time and memories. Our goal: to give them back a sense of hope, the promise of good days still to come, the sense of security that comes with knowing how to keep their loved one safe. What we are really talking about is peace of mind — both for the person living with Alzheimer’s, and for their family. And we wanted to help all families find that peace of mind, not just those whose loved ones reside at Carillon.

By meeting our residents where they are in their journey with Alzheimer’s, we are able to give them that peace of mind, so they can live fully and happily in the present. Carillon’s The Garden Place Alzheimer’s care program is home to acceptance, love and understanding. The philosophy is simple, but powerful: honor the person they once were, by accepting the person as they are today; keep them safe, healthy, engaged, and busy.

We saw the transformation that occurred for our Garden Place residents, and sought to help families and caregivers with their own journey to find peace of mind. That’s how the SAFE seminar was born.

Throughout the seminar, Benton (seen here in red) role plays the part of a woman with Alzheimer’s who has trouble communicating and may be acting out in an unsafe manner, while Drummond demonstrates tips for safely redirecting those behaviors with effective communication and opportunities for success.
