Carillon Assisted Living Spotlights Warning Signs of Vision Loss

April is Eye Health and Safety Month. While you enjoy the beautiful sights of spring—flowers in bloom, bright green grass and butterflies—take a few minutes to consider all your eyes do for you. Care for your vision by having regular eye exams and pay attention to any changes in vision you may experience. Following are several warning signs of age-related vision loss, according to the American Optometric Association:

  • Shifts in the clarity of your eyesight. Frequent changes in the clarity of your vision could be early signs of vision loss.
  • Increase in floaters and flashers. Floaters are small specks in the fluid covering your eye, and are harmless. If you see more floaters than normal, though, that could be a sign of changes in your vision. Bright flashing lights in your vision could be a sign of a tear in your retina.
  • Decrease in peripheral vision. The inability to see what is in your peripheral vision could be a warning sign for glaucoma.
  • Distorted images. When straight lines appear curvy and images are distorted or wavy, those could be signs of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is a serious concern for adults 65 and older in the United States, and is the leading cause behind vision loss for many seniors.

The best way to care for your eyes is to catch problems early with regular eye exams. If you or a loved one experiences any sudden changes in vision or eye pain, consult a physician as soon as possible.
